Effects of Abuse (Baby Steps to Mental Health)

Abuse is often overlooked, believed to be acceptable, or believed to be deserved in our communities. Often times physical and emotional abuse is only recognized when the effects begin to manifest in the victims. For example, you can identify children of parents that are overly critical, inconsistent, and frequently punish because their children often exhibit the following characteristics:

Low self-esteem

Negative parenting styles can lead to children feeling inadequate or inferior, leading to low self-esteem and a negative self-image.
